Embracing the Rough Draft

Aug 01, 2024

I came across a quote a few weeks ago by Adam Phillips that I’d like to share with you: "Human beings are rough drafts that continually mistake themselves for the final story, then gasp as the plot changes on the page of living. We do this largely because we are captives of comfort in our habits of thought and feeling, victims of certainty — that supreme narrowing of the mind." It got me thinking about how we often view ourselves and our lives as fixed, finished products that aren’t as successful as we imagined rather than ongoing, evolving stories.

Conversely, we all have moments when we feel like we've got everything figured out, only to be blindsided by an unexpected twist or turn. This week's thoughts are about embracing the idea that we are all works in progress, continually revising and improving our personal stories.

Embrace the Rough Draft Mentality

Life is full of revisions. Just like a writer goes through multiple drafts to refine a story (it usually takes me 3 for each week’s thoughts), we should see our lives as a series of drafts. Each experience, whether a success or a setback, is an opportunity to learn and grow. By accepting that we are rough drafts, we accept that it’s ok to make mistakes and to see those mistakes as part of our growth rather than as failures. Shifting to this mindset can help us approach life with more curiosity (I love the “be curious” line from Ted Lasso) and less fear of the unknown.

Break Free from the Comfort of Certainty

Phillips talks about being "captives of comfort" and "victims of certainty." It's easy to fall into the trap of sticking with what we know because it feels safe and familiar. However, deep down we all know that growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones and challenge our habitual ways of thinking and feeling. Embracing uncertainty can be daunting, but it's also where we find new opportunities and discover our true potential. We need to remind ourselves that it's okay not to have all the answers and that being open to change can lead to an incredible future.

Value the Process Over the Outcome

We often focus so much on the end goal that we forget to appreciate the process. But it's in the process — the day-to-day efforts, the small victories, and even the struggles — that we find true growth and fulfillment. By valuing the process, we can find joy in the progress we make each day. This doesn't mean we abandon our goals; rather, it means we recognize that the path to achieving them is just as important as the goals themselves. I believe that’s why James Clear says “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. It implies having a love of learning and resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. When we see ourselves as rough drafts, we adopt a growth mindset, understanding that we can always improve and that challenges are opportunities to enhance our skills and knowledge. It is why success is sweeter when you’ve had to overcome more to get it.

That Leads Me to This Week’s Challenge…

Reflect on the areas of your life where you might be mistaking the rough draft for the final story. Are there habits or ways of thinking that you've become too comfortable with? Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone and attack the unknown. See each day as a new page in your evolving story and remember that the plot changes are what make the story interesting and meaningful.

I’m thankful you went to work today, that you took the time to read this, and that you’re part of what makes this world amazing!

Final note - I will be taking some time off next week and won't be sharing any thoughts.
